Beyond “Compostable”: What Really Happens to Your Coffee Capsule?

Not all compostable coffee capsules are created equal.

When we hear the word "compostable," it's easy to assume a product can simply go into the compost and naturally break down. The important question is: Where can it compost, and what conditions does it need to break down?

So, how can a coffee capsule be compostable?

Firstly, a capsule needs to protect the coffee and withstand the heat and pressure of the brewing process. Then, once you've enjoyed your cup, the capsule needs an appropriate end-of-life pathway.

This is where the difference between industrial compostability and home compostability becomes important.


Industrial vs. home compostability

Some compostable coffee capsules use PLA (polylactic acid), a plant-based bioplastic that can be certified for industrial composting under standards such as EN 13432. Industrial composting, however, relies on controlled conditions such as higher temperatures (50–60°C) and specialised processing facilities.

Home compostability is different.

Home-compostable are designed and tested to break down under the conditions found in a home composting environment, without relying on the same industrial infrastructure. So when you see the word "compostable," it's worth asking: Compostable where?

The Greenwashing Trap

For retailers, the challenge goes beyond the label. In European and global markets, compostable PLA packaging faces complex waste-management and EPR requirements, while still sending pods to incinerators.

Industrial compostability can sound simple but reality depends on where a product actually ends up. That's why "Compostable" shouldn't be the end of the conversation. It needs to be asked Where and How?

The role of material innovation

Creating a coffee capsule that can perform during brewing while also being designed for home composting isn't straightforward. It requires materials that can provide the necessary structure and functionality while still having a suitable pathway at the end of their useful life.

One approach is to look beyond conventional plastic and aluminium and explore materials derived from natural resources. This is where wood cellulose and plant lignin can play a role.
